Café Laguardia
Jorge: The Café Laguardia isn't large, but it does have a lot of style and class. Owners Carlos and Jorge Laguardia run a cozy little restaurant in the Buckhorn neighborhood on Chicago's northside.

Glenn: Some of our favorite Cuban restaurants are just like this one.

Raúl: Hey, the prices are very reasonable here. I like that.

Jorge: We were told that they have good Cuban sandwiches here, and they do. We found that everything here is quite good, although Laguardia does suffer something of a split personality.

Glenn: They have several Mexican entrees on the menu, so don't be confused by the enchiladas on the menu -- they're NOT Cuban.

Jorge: What is Cuban is the delicious ropa vieja and Cuban nachos made with fried plantain chips and lots of onion and garlic.

Glenn: They make a great sandwich -- the jibarito -- that comes with your choice of a thin, palomilla-style steak, or a thin chicken breast on Cuban bread with fried plantain, tomato and lettuce. A great taste combination.

Jorge: If you like fish, we have one primary suggestion: pargo entero frito, a whole red snapper lightly dusted with flour and spices and deep fried in a classic Cuban preparation.

Glenn: For the undecided, the Taste of Cuba gives you a nice sampling of several Cuban mainstays. You also can't go wrong with any one of Cafe Laguardia's homemade soups.

Raúl: Another thing they do here that's a nice change is to offer potaje de frijoles Colorado as a side dish, in addition to the usual frijoles negros. This rich stew of kidney beans and chunks of Spanish chorizo is truly delicious. A larger serving could make a meal in itself.

Jorge: Cafe Laguardia is well worth a visit. They make an excellent paella that's a great choice for a special occasion, or if you are just feeling especially hungry.

Glenn: And check out the crazy leopard-skin covered chairs!
